Should We Take Supplements?

Wild Nutrition give us the down-low on Food-Grown® supplements, what they are & why they're better than synthetic supplements...

We caught up with Henrietta Norton, Co-founder of Wild Nutrition and picked her brains on why we should take supplements, which ones we should be taking and why hers are better than others on the market!

1. WHAT IS WILD NUTRITION?

We are a brand of Food-Grown® Supplements to support wellbeing for men, women and children. Beyond the fact that our formulations are built on curated expertise within the nutrition industry, our unique difference is how we produce our nutrients; By growing the nutrients in food through our pioneering Food-Grown® process rather than using processed synthetic chemicals, we use only the most body-ready forms of vitamins and minerals.

    2. DO WE ALL NEED TO TAKE SUPPLEMENTS? IF SO, WHY?

The sad fact is that our food simply isn’t as nutrient dense as it once was. Because of harvesting techniques, intensive farming and the use of pesticides and fertilisers, European soil is now estimated to be 72% less nutrient-rich than it was 60 years ago, meaning that the vital vitamins and minerals in our ‘fresh’ fruit and vegetables have been greatly depleted. Even ‘healthier’ organic food can be up to 10 times less nutritious than it once was. Add to this the increasing number of us on medication or exposed to greater environmental stress and we have a significant physiological gap between ‘supply and demand’.

    3. HOW DO WE GO ABOUT FINDING OUT WHAT SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENTS WE NEED?

There are a number of nutrients that can be recommended for specific symptoms, magnesium and B Complex to reduce tiredness for example or Zinc to support the immune system. We have split our range into Bespoke Man, Bespoke Woman, Bespoke Child and Bespoke Teen to help you navigate and find the product that’s right for you with more ease. To get a deeper understanding of what supplements you need I would recommend seeing a qualified Nutritionist who will be able to assess your needs and any nutrient shortfalls.

    4. WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON OR POPULAR SUPPLEMENT THAT PEOPLE NEED AND WHY?

Our B Complex Plus flies off the shelves. It provides a blend of B Vitamins, magnesium, calcium, CoEnzyme Q10 and the herb Ashwagandha for reducing the symptoms of tiredness and fatigue as well as supporting the nervous system and resilience to stress. It flies off the shelves because it works!

    5. AS A NUTRITIONAL THERAPIST, WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DEVELOP A RANGE OF SUPPLEMENTS?

I had been working as Head of Nutrition at a large supplement company along side my clinic work for 7 years. Sadly I became increasingly disillusioned with the industry. The market is dominated by products made from cheap synthetic chemicals (even the more expensive brands are still using these lower grade materials) that the body doesn’t naturally recognise. Often these are delivered in high doses, much of which is not metabolised, and filled with additives. To me, this makes the product a commodity rather than having been made with the intention to heal. I felt so passionately about finding another way that I spent 3 years researching a method to produce nutrients in a food form the body can use. I found it and created Wild Nutrition with my husband in 2013. I am so encouraged to see that there is a strong movement towards this and increasing awareness of the seismic difference that Food-Grown® nutrients can have on nourishing our health. I still work in the clinic because although formulating products is a fine art and requires expertise, I feel it is also important to look beyond the research papers and have first-hand experience with real people and real health issues – we don’t all fit into the ‘norm’. This aspect greatly influences my formulations.

    6. WHAT SUPPLEMENTS DO YOU TAKE?

My supplement routine will ebb and flow with the seasons so during the autumn and winter months I take the Immune Support (I haven’t had a cold since taking it) and in the summer I take the Antioxidant Boost to support my skin in the sun. I have a pot of Magnesium on my bedside table if I go through a period of disrupted sleep and all year round I take the B Complex Plus and High Strength Omega 3.

    7. WHAT ARE FOOD GROWN® SUPPLEMENTS? HOW ARE THEY BETTER THAN SYNTHETIC SUPPLEMENTS?

Food-Grown® nutrients are made by molecularly bonding vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C or zinc, into a live food cell. This food cell then metabolises and crucially, re-natures the vitamin or mineral, thereby becoming an integral part of its cellular matrix. This matrix now consists of not only the vitamin or mineral in its natural form but also a host of other nutrients such as glycoproteins, lipids, bioflavonoids and B vitamins. This ‘team’ of nutrients is so closely bonded that it can no longer be divided into its separate parts, just as they are found in a plant cell. In simple terms, the end result of this process is a genuine food cell containing vitamins and minerals in a structure that the body can recognise, metabolise and utilise naturally and efficiently.

My belief is that food supplements should be taken with the sole purpose of enhancing the body’s innate ability to heal and restore balance. It is not to add further toxic load or, through mega-dosing, creating imbalance elsewhere.

    8. HOW LONG DO YOU NEED TO TAKE SUPPLEMENTS FOR TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE EFFECTS?

The usual advice is 8-12 weeks but the experience of many of our customers suggest that the Food-Grown nutrients start making a difference within 2 weeks.

    9. IS THERE MUCH RESEARCH ON FOOD GROWN SUPPLEMENTS AND THEIR BENEFITS?

There are over 50 clinical trials on the process and nutrient forms. Anecdotal evidence from my own experience in a clinic, that of our customers and the practitioners that use them also underpin their efficacy.

    10. AS WELL AS BEING ARTIFICIAL AND PRESERVATIVE FREE, WHAT ELSE ARE THEY FREE FROM?

Added excipients and we only use vegetable cellulose capsules rather than tablets. Most of the range is suitable for vegetarians.

    11. ASIDE FROM TAKING SUPPLEMENTS, WHAT'S YOUR BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE TO PEOPLE STAYING HEALTHY?

As a nutritionist, I am obviously passionate about eating well as a way to support your well-being but there is no one rule fits all. Stick with the basics, cook from scratch as often as you can, eat a rainbow of vegetables per day, drink plenty of water, keep sugar to a minimal and find space in your day to unwind and go ‘off grid’.

    12. WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS OF JUICING? AND WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PRESS PRODUCTS? ☺

Juicing can make an excellent adjunct to a healthy diet. In the warmer months juicing is king but seasonal soups win hands down for me in the autumn and winter months. The PRESS favourites for me are the Greenhouse 4 juice and the Butternut and Beetroot soup.
