I Swapped My Morning Coffee To A Daily Celery For A Week

There was a time in my life (7 days ago) where I couldn’t get anything done without having my oat milk latte first thing in the morning. Literally as soon as I woke up, coffee would be on my mind. Can you relate? Well, keep reading as I’m sharing how I managed to ditch my addictive habit for good, have more energy than ever before and found a far better replacement…

In the beginning, it wasn’t THAT easy to let go. But that’s because I was really a coffee addict. I felt lethargic, grumpy and tired when I didn’t have my coffee. Also, it felt like I had to keep increasing my coffee intake to get that caffeine rush as my body got used to it.

See what happened when I was challenged to go green for 7 whole days...My lovely colleague interviewed me to see how I got on and the changes throughout the week.

DAY 1

What time did you go to bed last night? 11pm

How well did you sleep? Heavy sleep but broken, I woke up a few times in the night.

What did you have for breakfast? Porridge from Pret with peanut butter and berries, and a Daily Celery Juice

How’s your general mood today? Tired and low on energy so fuelling my body with food. Definitely missed the coffee especially as I did a morning gym class!

Did you have enough energy to exercise? Just enough. I didn’t feel full of energy as I usually do.

Any headaches? Yes, I had the worst headache all day. This is the one side effect I have noticed.

Were you tempted by sugary snacks or alcohol at all? Yes, I did have a vegan millionaire shortbread as a replacement for my coffee pick-me-up.

Can you notice any changes to your skin? None

DAY 2

What time did you go to bed last night? 10.30pm

How well did you sleep? Really well, I was knackered when I got into bed.

How’s your general mood today? Fridays are always the day I feel most tired.

Did you have enough energy to exercise? I didn’t exercise today.

Any headaches? Little but only for a few hours when I woke up

Were you tempted by sugary snacks or alcohol at all? No but I was very tempted to get my weekend ritual oat milk latte.

Can you notice any changes to your skin? No

DAY 4

What time did you go to bed last night? 11pm

How well did you sleep? I slept the best I have in a long time!

How hungry are you by 1pm? Yes, starving!

How’s your general mood today? Pretty good

Did you have enough energy to exercise? Yes

Any headaches? No

Were you tempted by sugary snacks or alcohol at all? Yes I wanted a really sweet coffee straight after I had eaten my lunch. I had a Berry Smoothie instead which hit that craving.

Can you notice any changes to your skin? Skin is slightly clearer with less blemishes. I would say I have less darkness under my eyes but maybe that’s due to my increased water intake.

Day 5

What time did you go to bed last night? 10.30pm

How well did you sleep? I went into a deep sleep but woke after 5am and found it difficult to fall back to sleep.

What did you have for breakfast? Weetabix, yoghurt mixed with protein powder, berries, peanut butter. Ginger shot (needed an extra kick) and a daily easy green.

DAY 7

What time did you go to bed last night? 9:30pm

How well did you sleep? Pretty well

What did you have for breakfast? Peanut butter on a bagel with half a banana and a drizzle of maple syrup.

How’s your general mood today? Again, energised and feel like I have got rid of that brain fog.

Did you have enough energy to exercise? Yes

Any headaches? No

Were you tempted by sugary snacks or alcohol at all? Nope. I had a ginger shot mid-afternoon.

Can you notice any changes to your skin? My complexion is definitely clearer but I have dark circles under my eyes due to me being really tired and probably not drinking enough water in the last couple of days.

Conclusion

Will you be swapping coffee for a green juice longer term?

Yes definitely, my head feel so much clearer and even if I was to have a coffee now I would only have a decaf one.

How’s your overall wellbeing after the challenge?

The biggest thing I have noticed is my mood/energy levels have got so much better. Usually I have big highs and then huge crashes. I have had a busy week, however, my moods have seen the biggest improvement. Normally I am prone to really bad migraines so I was surprised I didn’t get one of those but the headaches at the start were quite intense but this was just my body ridding itself of the toxins that it is so reliant on from coffee!

Any changes to your skin?

My skin is definitely clearer, less dry and I have less darkness under my eyes. I think this is due to me drinking a lot more water and not relying on coffee or sugary snacks for energy hits.

What is the biggest learning to take away from this challenge?

My mood/energy levels. Sometimes when I drink loads of coffee I get quite a bit of anxiety, most probably as a result of the caffeine. This stopped altogether. The biggest learning is that I don’t need to rely on coffee! I am going to treat it as more of a luxury and something I can really sit down and enjoy on the weekend (decaf) but going forward, GREEN JUICE FOR THE WIN).
