When it comes to achieving a glowing, dewy complexion, it is vital to work to support the whole body, not just the skin directly. It comes as a surprise to many but the skin is actually hugely reliant on good digestion, balanced immunity and hormones, and of course regular sleep cycles. This is why nutrition can have such a big impact on skin and why it’s so important to eat well.

We caught up with Nutritional Therapist and Skin Specialist Alice Mackintosh who shares her favourite supplements for skin health.

When it comes to supplements for skin, I find the best ones go in and work to support the body comprehensively. It’s important to remember that everyone is different, and we all need different things.

  • Equi Beauty Formula - for those with problem skin such as breakouts, acne or redness, or anyone wanting to slow the ageing process or just to make skin glow. This award-winning Beauty Formula contains over 60 ingredients to work to support the whole body to bring about better skin – hormones, digestion and immunity. All topped off with GlowCutis® technology, which combines collagen peptides, resveratrol, silica, hyaluronic acid and zinc to support skin regeneration. "I designed this formula as an easy all-in-one comprehensive skin formula and it also contains a top quality multivitamin".
  • Bare Biology, Lion Heart Omega 3 Liquid - there is something about this fish oil that just makes skin glow. Super rich in anti-inflammatory omega 3 and in liquid form for advanced absorption. Great if you have psoriasis, dryness or redness. "I also tell my brides to use it for the month before their wedding for that extra glow".
  • Pukka Aloe Vera Juice - great for skin hydration, clarity and brightness, a shot of aloe vera juice per day is also great for digestive health, which has added benefits for the skin.
  • Symprove - many people with problem skin also benefit from digestive support, because imbalances to the flora of the intestine can interfere with skin health and lead to redness, rashes, dryness and breakouts. This probiotic is vegan and has loads of research behind it and is super stable, so reaches the gut alive. "Expect results on the skin in around 6-8 weeks."

PRESS Favourites:

Wild Nutrition: Skin, Hair & Nails - this formula is a mix of natural probiotics and antioxidants to support that inner glow as well as a bespoke blend of Food-Grown nutrients and herbal extracts. Key ingredients include Zinc and Biotin which both support skin health as well as Vitamin C which aids with collagen production. Finally Vitamin E and copper protect skin cells from oxidative stress. Beauty really does comes from within, this formulation has been designed to nourish you from the root up.

The best skin supplements recommended

The Beauty Chef: Collagen Inner Beauty Boost - for anyone concerned about skin texture, firmness and fine lines, this naturally plumps skin from the inside out. This beauty-boosting. bio-fermented probiotic elixir has been scientifically formulated to help increase collagen production, support healthy skin structure and cultivate a smoother complexion.

The Beauty Chef: Glow Inner Beauty Powder - these convenient little sachets are perfect for on the go. Each sachet contains 23 superfoods to support the structure and integrity of the skin including chia seeds, green tea, ginger and even probiotics. There's no denying the link between the gut and skin, which is why this easy to digest probiotic rich formula readily supports skin radiance.

WelleCo: The Super Elixir - made up from a blend of greens, herbs, probiotics and enzymes, this is a great all-round booster to support the digestive system, hormonal balance and the circulatory system - to name a few. Free from preservatives, dairy and gluten, it will help balance the skin's acidity with the alkalinity of the blood, creating a healthy glow.
