Want Flawless Skin? Malin + Goetz Give Us Tips On How To 'Get That Glow!'

Cleansing products, diet or supplements... find out how the professionals do it!

We caught up with Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz, Co-founders of Malin + Goetz on how they look after their skin, with their food and botanical-based products as well as lifestyles - and found out a few top tips on how we can 'get the glow' too.

1. WHAT ARE YOUR DAILY CLEANSING RITUALS?

Floss, brush, then I wash my face with our Grapefruit Face Cleanser. That's the first thing in the morning (external cleanse) but I need to cleanse my mind as well as my body - so after a couple cups of coffee and a punishing read of the New York Times, and often the Guardian, I'm off to the gym. Then it's time to hit the showers, where I indulge in our Eucalyptus Shower Gel, Jojoba Face Scrub and Peppermint Shampoo. Before bed, another round of flossing, brushing my teeth and washing my face.

Why do you think that beauty brands are starting to use more food products in their ingredients?

3. WHAT FOOD DO YOU USE IN YOUR PRODUCTS?

We use quite a bit of foods and botanicals. Grapefruit, chamomile, peppermint, cilantro, avocado and rice bran just to name a few.

4. There are lots of homemade face treatments circulating at the moment, do you think these are effective or would you always recommend buying from a brand?

Mother nature does things very well, but not everything she does is effective, or even healthy for that matter; poison ivy is completely natural. Science plays a massive role helping us. Just think where we’d be without modern medicine? So we are firm believers in combining what mother nature and modern science do well. I just don’t think you can expect the same degree of efficacy from a homemade treatment but if it's something you feel works for you, and you enjoy – then there is certainly nothing wrong with it – assuming you are not using something irritating or harmful.

5. DO YOU LOOK AT NEW FOOD TRENDS AND SEE HOW YOU CAN INCORPORATE IT INTO SKINCARE?

We look at what ingredients and technologies are safe, healthy and efficacious. We don’t specifically look to food, but are always happy to incorporate botanicals in to our formulas when they bring an added benefit.

6. WHAT IS YOUR BEST SELLING PRODUCT?

7. IF YOU HAD TO RECOMMEND ONE THING FOR GLOWING SKIN, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Don’t overdo it. Keep it simple – find a gentle regime free of artificial fragrances, and remember that products are just one part of a healthy lifestyle. Eat well, exercise – don’t smoke, and be sure to stay out of the sun (and/or use a good SPF). Unfortunately, you’ll need to do more than one thing.

8. DOES YOUR CANNIBIS COLLECTION HAVE CANNIBIS IN IT?!

I can’t remember… Just kidding. No it doesn't. It’s meant to be an homage to a historic apothecary ingredient, as well as evocative to the years that I spent in Amsterdam.

9. DOES WHAT YOU EAT AFFECT SKIN? IF SO, HOW?

Yes. Eat well, and you will certainly live well. As I mentioned, your skin is your largest organ, so what you eat, and how you treat it will absolutely affect your skin. If you eat badly, you will most assuredly compromise how your skin performs and looks.

10. ARE THERE ANY FOODS THAT YOU AVOID?

I really enjoy eating, and I have a very curious palette. I love discovering new foods and cuisines as much as enjoying my cultural classics. There are certainly some things that I don’t really fancy, and there are things that I really try to avoid. My general rule is to avoid as much processed food as possible. I do eat pasta and grains, but I try to use the best quality ones and limit my consumption. But in general, I don’t eat packaged foods, and try to eat the freshest food possible.

11. WHAT VITAMINS (SUPPLEMENTS) ARE BEST FOR SKIN?

Vitamin E, Vitamin B5, Vitamin D but I’m a believer in that if you are eating properly, you don’t need supplements – unless you have some kind of deficiency, and a doctor recommends them.

12. WHAT ARE THE NEW SKIN TRENDS IN NEW YORK, SO WE CAN BE AHEAD OF THE GAME

I think the trends in skincare are the same in NYC as they are in London.  Personally, I like to avoid trends, because skincare is not about fashion, but about finding a healthy way of living.
